Brief in introduction to the history of Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle is said to have been built in 1589 by Mori Terumoto.
After the Battle of Sekigahara, Masanori Fukushima was the lord of the castle, and after that the Asano family was the lord of the castle until the Meiji period!!

Did Emperor Meiji live in Hiroshima Castle?

In fact, Hiroshima used to be the capital !!!!
To be precise, it’s called the provisional capital.

Two reasons!
・There was Hiroshima Station on the Sanyo Railway, which continued from Tokyo at the time.
・There was Ujina Port where large ships can be shipped.

For that reason, Emperor Meiji once lived in Hiroshima Castle!
During the Sino-Japanese War, Emperor Meiji moved in to take command.
Emperor Meiji stayed in Hiroshima for 227 days and even held the Imperial Diet meeting!!
After the Meiji Restoration, Hiroshima remains the only city other than Tokyo to have its capital.

The site of Imperial General Headquarters where Emperor Meiji stayed for 227 days
It became impossible to restore due to the atomic bomb.

The name of the place where Hiroshima Castle is derived from is also a flicker.

There are moats in Hiroshima City such as ”Hacchobori” and ”Yagenbori” in Hiroshima City!!
In addition, the current main street of Hiroshima City, ”Hondori”, was created when the castle town was developed.
There are other gates such as ”Kyoguchi Gate” and ”Otemon Gate”.

The name given to Hiroshima Castle when it was built is still used today as a place name!!

Features of Hiroshima Castle

Inner moat water

The inner moat of Hiroshima Castle is fed with water from the former Ota River!
Tracing back to its roots, until the Meiji period, water was supplied from the Ota River, but water supply was stopped, and the water quality deteriorated as it became an enclosed water area.
With the advent of the Heisei era, it became a topic to add water to the moat again, and it was necessary to review the water quality as an issue.
In order to improve it, the water quality was restored by adding water from the former Ota River!!
