Do you know the legend of Beppu Benten Pond?
There is a legend about Beppu Benten Pond, which is so beautiful that a water station has been installed.
About 1,000 years ago, the village of Iwami, located at the foot of Akiyoshidai, had a poor harvest because of wasteland. One night, a chief met an old woman who gave him a sign and a sickle. Following the oracle, he and the villagers worked together to cultivate the wasteland. However, due to lack of water, they could not cultivate the fields. So the villagers worshipped the god and prayed to Benzaiten, the god of water, for the blessing of water. Then an old woman appeared again. This time, she thrust her bamboo stick deep into the ground and disappeared. When the staff was pulled out, beautiful water gushed out, and within one night a large pond was created, resulting in a bountiful harvest for the village.
